Enough Feathers to Fly

Stories of a farm and a life made whole

A farm memoir told in stories, letters, and journals about learning to love an unpredictable world and coming home to yourself.

Natalie Gould spent decades searching for a place to belong. She finally found it—a farm beside her grandparents’ land in Sonoma County, California.

With her misanthropic cat she sets out to build the sanctuary she’d always imagined. She plants an orchard. She broods chicks in her bathroom. She attempts to herd cows. Her life settles into a familiar rhythm tied to land, family, and neighbors.

Then, massive wildfires break her refuge open. A debilitating nervous system disorder triggered by a Covid infection follows, forcing her to rebuild from within.

Aided by the creatures who accompany her, she eventually finds a hope that lives alongside life's mud, muck, and ash.

Gould’s personal reflections and humorous narratives take herself and the world seriously and guffaw at it all in the same breath. Enough Feathers to Fly explores the full spectrum of existence with a generous sprinkling of magic, joy, and possibility.

Natalie Gould is a coach, storyteller, and retreat leader residing in Sonoma County, California. She spent 13 years as CFO of a small multinational, and once worked as a scenic painter. Her love of food and cooking expanded during nearly four years living in Italy. She has wrestled sheep in Scotland as well as California. Enough Feathers to Fly is her first book.
